Using an 'in heat' action list

Use an 'In Heat' Action List to select a sub-set of animals from the In Heat report

Updated yesterday

Within the In Heat report, you can edit the 'For Breeding' rule or create an action list. The In Heat Action List consists of one or more rules, allowing you to quickly select a subset of animals for follow-up actions. An In Heat Action List must be created in the Datamars Livestock web app, not the mobile app.

The default 'For Breeding' rule

A default 'For Breeding' rule has been preconfigured to suit most breeding scenarios. The default rule excludes animals which are marked "Do not breed" and are Dry. Voluntary Waiting Period is blank, meaning that animals in their VWP will be included for breeding.

We recommend checking the settings in the 'For Breeding' rule and editing it to suit your farm.

To edit the 'For Breeding' default rule:

  1. Click on Reproduction.

  2. Under In Heat Action List, click For Breeding.

  3. Click Edit Rule.

  4. Apply criteria.

For example, you could change VWP to No to exclude animals which are in their voluntary waiting period:

Creating a customised 'In Heat' Action List rule

To create an 'In Heat' Action List rule:

  1. Click on Reproduction.

  2. Under In heat action list, click + Add new rule.

  3. Apply criteria.
For example, you could create a rule to view animals in heat in a particular group:

📝 If you have more than one rule, the In Heat Action List will combine all animals selected by the various rules together in one place.

✋ It is important to understand that by using an action list, you are excluding some animals which may be on heat. When you first set up and use a Heat Action List, we recommend checking the In Heat List regularly to make sure you are not missing animals which are in heat, but do not match the rules you have set up in your In Heat Action List. You may need to edit the rules to get the right balance between under-reporting and over-reporting.

You can then use the In Heat Action List as the basis to draft and check animals (see below).

Drafting animals

📝 If you have a Tru-Test Dairy Drafter/Sort Gate, the In Heat Action List will automatically be used to form the draft list, rather than the In Heat List.

Third-party drafters - Draft animals and breed them using your normal methods.
