You may want to draft (sort) animals based on performance or genetic gain. We look at two common ways drafts are set up: drafting by weight, weigh gain or rules-based drafting (XR5000 only).

📝 Depending on the country settings of your 5000 indicator, the term drafting or sorting may be used. They are the same thing.

The Drafting (Sorting) feature in the 5000 series weigh scale indicator allows animals to be sorted by weight, weight gain or other advanced criteria (depending on the indicator model).
Drafting is a powerful feature that allows you to quickly and easily select animals for optimal performance or genetic gain.
You can achieve the following with this feature:
Sort animals into groups based on their weight, weight gain, single criterion (e.g. Breed, Sex or Condition Score) or multiple advanced criteria (e.g. combinations of weight range, sex and breed).
Label the sort directions with arrows or pen number. You can also include an additional text label.
Take action if no ID tag is available for an animal.
Use the recalculate feature to test “what if” scenarios such as changing weight limits.
Override the draft direction on the Weigh screen based on your own observations.

The three models of the 5000 indicator have different drafting capabilities:
JR5000 | The JR5000 model supports drafting by weight only. |
ID5000 | The ID5000 model supports drafting by weight, weight gain or a single criterion (e.g. Breed, Sex or condition score). |
XR5000 | Only the XR5000 model supports drafting by multiple advanced criteria (e.g. combinations of weight range, sex and breed). |

Follow these instructions whenever you want to set up a draft.
Power on your 5000 indicator and select New Session.
Name your session and press Start Session.
Go to Options and Drafting Settings....
📝 If you can't see Drafting Settings... on the menu, drafting is turned off. Drafting must be turned on to draft animals. Turn drafting on by navigating from the Home screen, to Settings, Drafting, Other draft settings. Select Drafting to ON and set ability to show drafting direction by ticking Show draft direction on weigh screen. 📝 Rules based drafting only applies to XR5000 indicators (not ID5000 or JR5000 indicators).
The rules based drafting feature is an extremely flexible way to select your animals based on any criteria such as weight, sex and/or breed.
The example below shows you how to set up a draft to cull non-Angus animals less than 500 kg, and draft Angus heifers more than 500 kg.

The Settings screen for drafting by a singlre criterion average weight gain is shown below.
💡 You can save your setup as a Favourite so that the next time you repeat the same job, you can quickly re-use the same setup.
When drafting is enabled and Show draft direction on Weigh screen has been enabled during Step 1 of the drafting setup wizard, the Weigh screen will display the draft direction in a section of the screen.
This also includes the count for each sort direction or pen, each with a label:

📝 Animals must meet all the conditions set up in your rule for them to draft.
