Troubleshooting - Checking the gateway and the status of active tags

Check that the gateway is OK and that active tags are connected. Resolve Offline or Off Animal notifications.

Updated this week

During troubleshooting, you may want to check the status of the gateway

and whether active tags are sending data. Find out what to do if a gateway is Offline or an active tag status is Off Animal or Offline.

How can I check that the gateway is on and working? What should I do if the gateway is Offline?

In the mobile app:

  1. Go to My Devices, then tap on Farm Network Gateway:

  2. View the Last seen time:

In the web app:

  1. Go to the Home screen. Click on the Farm Network Gateway:

  2. View the Last seen time:

If the gateway is offline or has not been seen for a while (e.g. a few hours), perform the following checks:

Check power supply to gateway and modem

Is the power LED on the gateway and modem ON?

If not, check that the gateway or modem hasn't been switched off. Check the circuit board to see if a circuit breaker has tripped. If power was the issue and it has been re-established, wait for a few minutes then check the gateway Last seen time again.

Check internet connection - ethernet

Connect a laptop to the modem using an ethernet cable and a different port.

If this internet connection is OK, the gateway ethernet cable may be damaged and should be replaced.

If this internet connection is not OK, check with your internet service provider. If the ISP says everything is OK, the gateway may be faulty.

Check internet connection - Wi-Fi

Connect a mobile phone to the modem using the same Wi-Fi connection as the gateway.

If this internet connection is OK, the gateway may be faulty.

Check internet connection - LTE

Use a mobile phone to check the signal strength (number of bars) at the gateway location.

If the signal strength is OK, the gateway may be faulty.

Active Tag Status

This means

Action

Offline

The active tag is still paired to an animal but is out of range of the gateway.

Check that the animal is within range of the gateway. If it is, then check the active tag for damage. If it seems OK, swipe the active tag with the mag key. If should flash twice. If it doesn't, the active tag must be off. Hold the mag key near the active tag for 6 seconds to turn the active tag back on. If it will not turn on, the active tag may be faulty and require replacement. Contact your local retailer.

Off animal

The active tag has been physically removed from the animal, but the animal hasn't been marked as sold or died in the software.

Mark the animal as sold or died in Datamars Livestock OR your farm management software (if using) then wait for data to synchronise.

The active tag may have fallen off the animal.

Physically check the animal to make sure that the active tag is still fitted.

If it is still fitted, the active tag may be faulty and require replacement. Contact your local retailer.

If it is not fitted and you cannot find the old one, fit a new active tag to the animal. It will automatically unpair the old active tag.

💡 You can set up notifications so you are alerted when an active tag goes offline.
