BETA - The pre-mating report - Treatment calculators

The pre-mating reports contain extra details in the lead-up to the planned start of mating. Calculators are provided to help with decision-making.

Updated over 2 weeks ago

A pre-mating report shows your herd's cycling rate, in the lead-up to mating. As the PSM (planned start of mating) day approaches, the Day -14, -7, and PSM reports show extra details to help with decision-making.

Early Treatment Calculators

On the bottom of page 1 of the pre-mating report, two calculations are displayed:

DIM Gain From Treatment

Projected impact on the number of days in milk (DIM) if animals are treated.

Treatment Group
3 Week ICR Change:

Projected impact on the percentage of animals 'In Calf' at 3-weeks (3WICR) if animals are treated.

More detail on treatment interventions is provided on page 2 of the report.

Your herd non-cycler projection for cows eligible to treat graph

The first graph shows a prediction of the percentage of cows eligible to be treated on or before the planned start of mating date:

In the example below, on the PSM date, 45% of the herd will be eligible for treatment (133 animals).

In-calf rate in treated vs untreated non-cyclers graph

The second graph shows a prediction of the percentage of animals in-calf after PSM if treated, shown in green:

Basis of the calculations

The calculators incorporate findings from published research and industry analyses:

  • McDougall et al. reported a 16 DIM difference between early-treated cows and untreated controls.

  • Later treatment (7 days into mating) produced a smaller benefit of 9 DIM. Zoestis.

  • A retrospective study of over 8,300 CIDR-treated non-cyclers (Veterinary Centre Ltd.) demonstrated a 47% 4-day in-calf rate from CIDR programs.

For calculation purposes, cow eligibility is set at ≥45 DIM at insemination. Final eligibility should be confirmed in consultation with your veterinarian.
