Troubleshooting the WOW system

Try these solutions if you have a problem with your WOW system

📝 In 2025, most control units were upgraded with new software. If you have trouble performing the steps in this article, see the equivalent article referencing the old software.

The WOW system has no power

  1. Stand beside the control unit.

  2. On your mobile phone, open the Wi-Fi settings and look for rwow... in the list of Wi-Fi networks:

  3. If rwow is not in the list, it is possible that the system has insufficient power.

Battery powered WOW systems:

Check the solar panels as they may not be recharging the batteries properly:

  • Check that the solar panels are facing the midday sun with no obstacles or shadows affecting them.

  • Check that the solar panels are clean. A build-up of dust or bird excreta can affect performance.

  • Check the solar panel cables and battery cables are connected and are not damaged.

  • Check the solar controller on the inside lid of the control unit. A green LED should indicate it is charging:

Check the batteries, they may faulty:

  1. Check all the battery connections including the jumper lead.

  2. Use a multimeter to check the voltage of each battery. The battery voltage reading should be above 12.2 V. If it is below this, try recharging the battery using a charger with a de-sulfation capability. This may help recover the battery, depending on how sulfated it is.

  3. Once recharged, reboot the control unit by disconnecting the solar panel connectors and the battery power connector, wait for two minutes, then reconnect the battery power connector only:

The system should come back online.

4. If the problem persists, try replacing the batteries.

Mains powered WOW systems:

  1. Check that the control unit is plugged in and powered on from the mains power supply.

  2. Plug another electrical device into the mains power and see if it powers on. If not, there may be an issue with that plug.

  3. Plug the control unit into a different mains plug.

  4. Reboot the control unit. The system should come back online.

If the problem persists, contact the support team.

Logging in to OpenWRT

  1. Stand beside the control unit.

  2. Use a laptop to search for the control unit Wi-Fi. This is a unique Device ID, but it will always begin with the letters rwow-

  3. Enter the network security key (password).
    This is scorpio followed by the last 6 characters of the unique Device ID, as used in the Wi-Fi network name. Type the characters exactly as they appear, using lower case letters and no spaces. Example:

  4. In an internet browser address bar, enter the URL 192.168.50.1 to launch the OpenWRT configuration page:

  5. The OpenWRT login page will be displayed.

    💡 If the OpenWRT login is not displayed, press the Home key on your keyboard to reveal the full URL and change https://192.168.50.1 to http://192.168.50.1.

  6. Log in with these credentials:

    • Username = root

    • Password = scorpio followed by the last 6 characters of the unique Device ID. The Device ID can be seen at the top of the screen. Example:

    The laptop will now be logged in to OpenWRT.

Checking EID identification

  1. Position an EID tag near the EID antenna. Alternatively, herd an animal fitted with an EID tag over the platform.

3. In OpenWRT, click on Dashboard and scroll down to the Scorpio Status section.

4. If no EID appears, check that the antenna is plugged in correctly.

5. Turn off all other electronic equipment (other EID readers within 50 m, electric fence energizers, irrigators, milk pumps, etc) and repeat the test. If the EID tag is read, there is an electrical interference issue to be resolved. Contact the support team.

Inaccurate weights or no weights

  1. Stand on the middle of the platform.

  2. In OpenWRT, click on Dashboard and scroll down to the Scorpio Status section.

    Check your own weight is displayed correctly:

4. If you can't see your weight, check that the load bar cables are plugged in correctly.

5. Check the rubber and poly seals on the inside and outside of the platform are intact and undamaged. Check underneath the platform to make sure that there are no rocks or debris is preventing movement. If the problem persists, contact the support team.

Poor or lost internet connection

A poor internet connection will slow down data the flow of data to Datamars Livestock. A lost connection will prevent data flow altogether.

Removing the load bars for servicing
